Shop by build step

1. Cut parts off the runner

A sharp single-blade nipper leaves a clean cut and a small nub, so there is less sanding and no white stress marks. See GodHand nippers and the Ultimate Nipper.

2. Sand nubs & seams

Work up through the grits (400, then 1000, then 2000) to erase nub marks and seam lines before anything goes on the surface. See Kamiyasu sanding sticks and GodHand files.

3. Assemble & detail

Mr. Cement and putty for gaps, pin vises for drilled detail, masking and panel-line markers for crisp lines.

4. Prime & paint

Surfacer first, then color by brush, spray can or airbrush. Lacquer (Mr. Color, SMS) gives the toughest finish; water-based (Aqueous Hobby Color, Acrysion) suits an easy indoor setup. Airbrushes and compressors are in Tools.

5. Weather & finish

Decals and washes add scale and story; a flat, semi-gloss or gloss topcoat seals everything and hides the plastic shine. See Gundam Decals and Mr. Weathering.

6. Display

What is the difference between Tools, Paints and Accessories?

Tools are what you use and keep: nippers, files, brushes, airbrushes. Paints are anything that goes on as a liquid, including surfacer, thinner and markers. Accessories become part of the finished piece or its display: option parts, decals, stands and bases.

What should a first-time builder buy?
