Commissioned in 1921, the IJN Nagato-class battleship Mutsu was a formidable vessel, displacing 42,850 tons and capable of cruising at 27 knots. This historic ship, along with the Nagato, was the first class of battleship in the world to be fitted with 16` (40.64cm) guns.
[Relegated primarily to training and support duties throughout WWII, the Mutsu met a rather ignominious end on June 8, 1943. Her #3 turret`s magazine exploded while moored near Hashirajima, resulting in the tragic loss of many crewmembers. Only 353 of the Mutsu`s 1,474 crewmembers survived the explosion and subsequent sinking.]
