This transformation was a direct response to the lessons learned from the Battle of Midway and the subsequent Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, where the need for improved reconnaissance and supply functions became evident. In August 1944, the Hayasui embarked on a fateful journey from Imari Bay to Singapore, only to be targeted and ultimately sunk by torpedoes in a coordinated attack by the submarines Redfish, Bluefish, and Spacefish.
