Gunpla Ver.Ka Explained: What "Version Katoki" Means, Every MG Ver.Ka Kit, and a Tier List

Short answer: Ver.Ka means "Version Katoki". It is the Master Grade sub-brand that mecha designer Hajime Katoki personally manages for Bandai: he redraws the mobile suit, supervises the kit from plastic colours to decal design, and directs the box art, product photos and manual. Ver.Ka kits are still 1/100 Master Grades, but with sharper proportions, denser panel lines and a large sheet of waterslide decals in his marking style. The line started with the MG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.Ka in December 2002 and now runs to about two dozen retail kits plus P-Bandai variants. What does Ver.Ka actually mean?

Bandai's own definition: Master Grade Ver.Ka is "a Master Grade brand managed by designer Hajime Katoki". Katoki, who already draws concept designs for many MG and HG kits, teams with Bandai's hobby division on each Ver.Ka release and supervises everything from the colour of the plastic to the marking decals; the product photography, package illustration and instruction manual are also produced under his direction. In practice that produces three things you can see on the shelf: a redesigned silhouette (longer limbs, tighter waist, more angular armour than the anime-accurate MG of the same suit), heavy surface detail with panel lines and vents that were not in the original design, and a big waterslide decal sheet with fictional maintenance markings and unit numbers. The large "Ver.Ka" mark on the box is the giveaway.

Ver.Ka vs regular MG vs MG Ver.2.0: which is which?

The important thing Ver.Ka is not: it is not a higher grade. The frame, scale and difficulty are Master Grade. MGEX sits above it as a separate tier (see our MGEX guide), and the MGEX Unicorn is itself a Ver.Ka, which is why its full name is MGEX Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka. MG Ver.Ka tier list: which ones are worth it?

This is our ranking, based on what each kit does that others do not. Every Ver.Ka gets the Katoki decal sheet and proportions, so the tiers are about engineering, gimmicks and how well the kit has aged.

S tier: buy these first

• Sazabi Ver.Ka (2013): silver frame moulded in a metallic-texture material, opening funnel container with six removable funnels, deployable apogee-motor covers, and the full Char's Counterattack weapon set including the long rifle. The head mono-eye takes Bandai's separately sold green LED. The kit most people mean when they say "Ver.Ka".
• Nu Gundam Ver.Ka (2012): the Sazabi's rival and the kit that set the modern Ver.Ka standard. Non-ABS frame, hidden green psycho-frame that shows when armour sections slide apart, LED-ready head, and the option to build the double Fin Funnel loadout.
• Zeta Gundam Ver.Ka (2023): the 20th-anniversary Ver.Ka. Katoki went back to the TV setting illustrations rather than the sleek modern silhouette, and the kit pairs that with a full no-parts-swap Wave Rider transformation using locking mechanisms, landing gear that deploys from the shield and flying armour, and metallic extra-finish parts.

A tier: excellent, with one caveat each

• Hi-Nu Gundam Ver.Ka (2014): built on the Nu Ver.Ka engineering with new proportions, funnels that take an LED unit, a hidden forearm weapon, movable thrusters and a dedicated stand. Caveat: the funnel-laden backpack is why the stand is in the box; plan to use it.
• Wing Gundam Zero EW Ver.Ka (2020): all-new moulding with joints re-engineered so the wings link to body motion, the Twin Buster Rifle stows inside the wings, and a parts-swap Neo Bird Mode. Caveat: the wings are large and the swap parts add to shelf clutter.
• FAZZ Ver.Ka (2020): Katoki's own Gundam Sentinel design, with armour that moves with the arms, a forearm roll joint, front armour that pivots for leg articulation and hand-opened missile pods. Caveat: it is a bulk kit by design, so poseability has limits.
• Full Armor ZZ Gundam Ver.Ka (2026): three configurations in one box, Full Armor ZZ, Hyper Mega Cannon mount and Enhanced ZZ, with the same forearm roll trick as the FAZZ. Caveat: newest and therefore the least proven; it inherits the 2017 ZZ core.
• MGEX Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka (2020): technically a Ver.Ka, practically a different price class with a full LED frame; see the MGEX guide. Caveat: cost.

B tier: good kits, buy for the subject

• ZZ Gundam Ver.Ka (2017): full colour separation by parts and the complete G-Fortress transformation with Core Fighter, Core Top and Core Base. Heavy and complex to transform.
• V2 Gundam Ver.Ka (2015): transforms to Core Fighter, Top Fighter and Bottom Fighter, three pilot figures, waterslides. Small for the price.
• Narrative Gundam C-Packs Ver.Ka (2024) and Sinanju Stein (Narrative Ver.) Ver.Ka (2024): the two newest Narrative kits, with sculpted clear psycho-frame on the Narrative and a selectable grey frame for the non-NT-D state. Niche subjects, modern engineering.
• Full Armor Gundam Ver.Ka and Psycho Zaku Ver.Ka (2016): the Thunderbolt pair, both bristling with weapons and sub-arms. Great if you like the manga, over-equipped if you do not.
• Banshee Ver.Ka (2018), Full Armor Unicorn Ver.Ka (2011), Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka (2007): the Unicorn family. The 2007 base kit is the origin of the MG Unicorn transformation, but the newer MGEX has superseded it as the definitive version.

C tier: for collectors and completists

• RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.Ka (2002): the first Ver.Ka and historically important, but 2002 engineering; the MG RX-78-2 Ver.3.0 and PG Unleashed are the modern picks for the same suit.
• Ball Ver.Ka (2004): cheap, quick, a fun companion piece for any Ver.Ka Gundam. Not a centrepiece.
• Crossbone Gundam X-1 Ver.Ka (2006), V Gundam Ver.Ka (2009), V-Dash Ver.Ka (2010), Sinanju Stein Ver.Ka (2013): solid mid-2000s to early-2010s MGs whose main draw is that they are the only MG of their subject.

Are Ver.Ka kits harder to build?

The plastic goes together like any Master Grade. What adds time is the decal sheet: Ver.Ka kits ship with a large waterslide sheet rather than foil stickers, and applying it properly means a gloss coat first, a setting solution, and a flat or gloss top coat after. Different, not automatically better. Ver.Ka gives you Katoki's proportions, heavier detail and a full waterslide sheet. If you want anime-accurate looks, the regular MG or its Ver.2.0 of the same suit is the right choice.

Which Ver.Ka should I buy first?

Sazabi Ver.Ka or Nu Gundam Ver.Ka. Both are modern, well engineered, widely reissued and the pair looks right displayed together. The Zeta Ver.Ka is the pick if you want a transforming kit.

Is Ver.Ka the same as Ver.2.0?

No. Ver.2.0 and Ver.3.0 are Bandai's engineering updates that keep the anime design. Ver.Ka is a redesign under Katoki. A suit can have both, as the RX-78-2 and Zeta do.
