Description
Discover the iconic AF-2 Guardian anti-submarine aircraft model kit, a remarkable representation of the aircraft that served the US Navy during the 1950s. This detailed model captures the essence of the Guardian, which was initially developed during WWII as a torpedo-bomber under the Grumman project G-70 and recognized by the Navy as the XTB3F. The radar-equipped Hunter version, prototype AF-2, took its maiden flight in November 1948, followed by the AF-2S in January 1949. Entering service a year later, the Guardian was later complemented by the AF-3S version, equipped with a magnetic anomaly detector for enhanced operational capabilities. Notably used during the Korean War to defend US Navy vessels, the Guardian was phased out from front-line service in 1955, remaining with US Naval Reserve units until 1957.
This model kit includes everything needed to build the final attack version of the Guardian, featuring:
[Includes]:
- Eight styrene runners
- One clear sprue
- A set of resin parts
- A photo-etched fret
The kit also introduces a new AF-3S sprue, which includes a new set of mainwheels with the correct number of slots in the hubs and an enlarged stbd wing pod for a more efficient radar than the one used in the AF-2S version.
The decal sheet offers options for four different machines, including two painted in blue as per regulations later in the war. One of the blue Guardians was operated by VS-20 in 1953, initially from NAS Atsugi in Japan, and later from the aircraft carrier USS Bagoeng Strait. The other served with VS-27, flying from CVS-36 USS Antietam in the Mediterranean in 1953. Additionally, AF-3Ss machines that remained in service with reserve units long enough received a new Gray-White scheme, which is also provided in this kit for NAS Los Alamitos based machines, complete with orange fuselage bands marking training machines.
[Mold Color]: Grey
