In 1972, the introduction of the Soviet "Strela" man-portable anti-aircraft system by the Vietnamese marked a new challenge for low-flying targets like the Cobras. However, some helicopters were ingeniously modified with a device that diverted hot gases from the engine upwards, effectively protecting them from the Strela's homing heads. This adaptation showcased the AH-1G's exceptional survivability and its capability to withstand emerging threats.
