Originally developed from the P-35 as the advanced AP-4, the P-43 emerged as a formidable high-altitude fighter. It boasts a robust 1200hp R-1380 air-cooled star-type 14-cylinder engine, achieving a groundbreaking maximum speed of 565km/h during flight tests. This made it the first U.S. military aircraft to surpass the 500km/h mark. In 1942, it showcased its exceptional capabilities by climbing over 10,000 meters and capturing the summit of Mount Everest from an impressive altitude of 13,000 meters. Until the introduction of the P-38, the P-43 was the sole Allied aircraft capable of intercepting the Japanese military’s Type 100 reconnaissance aircraft.
