ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam

ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam is a ZAFT Second Stage Series prototype from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004–05, C.E. 73) that transforms between MS mode and a high-speed MA mode. Sting Oakley of Phantom Pain steals it from Armory One before ZAFT can deploy it and re-numbers it RGX-01.

What it does in the story

It is taken in the Armory One raid that opens the series, and Sting flies it against ZAFT through the first half of the show. Moved to Earth, it is badly damaged by Kira Yamato's Freedom Gundam at the Battle of Crete, then repaired and reassigned as an escort for the Destroy Gundam.

What makes it different

• The MA mode keeps the hands. Most transformable suits fold the arms away in flight. The Chaos's MA mode keeps full use of the MS hands, and its thrusters are enough for atmospheric flight without extra equipment.
• Its weapon pods work for any pilot. The two EQFU-5X pods detach for wireless attack, each with a beam assault cannon and twelve AGM141 Firefly missiles. A revised DRAGOON system with better quantum communications lets a pilot without high spatial awareness steer them.
• The heavy beam cannon is MA-mode only. The MGX-2235B Calidus Kai sits in the backpack, and the MS-mode head has to lower before it is exposed. It is a high-speed version of the Abyss Gundam's Calidus.
• It runs on a battery. The Junius Treaty rules out a reactor, so the suit depends on a Deuterion beam to recharge. Phantom Pain's ships cannot fire one, so this machine never gets a refill.

How big is it?

• Overall height: 17.43 m in MS mode, according to Bandai's published spec
• 1/144: roughly 12 cm
• 1/100: roughly 17.5 cm
