ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam

ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam is the machine Kira Yamato pilots in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004–2005, C.E. 73). Bandai calls it the final trump card built to break the deadlock between Z.A.F.T. and the Earth Alliance, and singles out its gold joints.

What it does in the story

It enters the Second Bloody Valentine War as the machine held back for the point where the stalemate had to be broken, fighting on the Archangel side. Bandai says it was developed together with the Infinite Justice, so the two arrive as a pair.

What makes it different

• It is a new machine, not a reworked Freedom. The number changes from ZGMF-X10A to ZGMF-X20A, and Bandai's wording is a new engine with several times the combat capability of the Freedom. The backpack is a different arrangement too, built around remote weapons rather than wing cannons alone.
• The gold joints are part of the specification. Bandai lists the golden colour of the joints as the suit's characteristic feature, a by-product of the new frame rather than a paint choice. The Real Grade kit gold-plates the wing parts and moulds the frame in gold colour, while the Master Grade Full Burst version plates the joints.
• The wings are weapon racks. The super DRAGOON units are carried inside the wing assemblies and separate from them to attack, which is why the wings open so far in the deployed pose. On the High Grade version the DRAGOONs detach individually, and the Real Grade wing folds and unfolds through the same range.
• It is not the Strike Freedom from the 2024 film. The suit in SEED Freedom is the Strike Freedom Type II, a separate design with its own number, ZGMF/A-262B. The ZGMF-X20A covered here is the C.E. 73 machine from the television series.
