ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam is the Z.A.F.T.-built machine Kira Yamato flies in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002–2003, C.E. 71). Bandai's profile describes it as running on a nuclear engine with a Neutron Jammer Canceler instead of a battery, with two beam cannons on its back and two railguns at the waist.
What it does in the story
Lacus Clyne takes the suit out of Z.A.F.T. hands and gives it to Kira, who uses it to cover the Archangel's withdrawal as Alaska falls, and deliberately avoids enemy cockpits. Badly damaged at Jachin Due, the Freedom is repaired at a secret Orb factory, and Kira still flies the same airframe in SEED Destiny until he moves to the Strike Freedom.
What makes it different
-
It does not run on a battery.
A nuclear engine with a Neutron Jammer Canceler means Phase Shift armour stays active without draining a charge. Bandai's profile leans on that combination when it describes the suit's endurance and volume of fire.
-
Two cannons on the back, two railguns at the waist.
The fixed armament splits between the wing-mounted beam cannons and the pair of railguns built into the waist armour. Both sets point forward at once in the Full Burst pose, with the wings open and every muzzle aligned.
-
It is repaired after Jachin Due, not replaced.
Bandai's SEED Destiny profile states that the Freedom was heavily damaged in the battle of Jachin Due and repaired at Orb's secret factory. That is why the same machine, not a successor, is the one Kira uses later.
-
The Freedom and the Strike Freedom are separate machines.
The Strike Freedom is ZGMF-X20A, built two years later for C.E. 73 with a new engine that multiplies its combat capability, plus gold-coloured joints. It is a different airframe with a different backpack arrangement, not a repaint or a tuned Freedom.
How big is it?
- MGSD: about 115 mm tall, the height Bandai lists on the kit's product page
- 1/144 and 1/100: roughly 13 cm and 18 cm by proportional conversion; Bandai's profile lists no machine height

Frequently asked questions
1. Is the Freedom Gundam the same machine as the Strike Freedom?
No. The Freedom is ZGMF-X10A from SEED, and the Strike Freedom is ZGMF-X20A from SEED Destiny two years later. Bandai's wording for the later suit is a new engine, combat capability several times higher, and gold joints.
2. Was the Freedom destroyed at Jachin Due?
Bandai's SEED Destiny profile says it was heavily damaged in the battle and then repaired at a secret Orb factory. The machine came back into service rather than being written off, which is why Kira still has a Freedom before the Strike Freedom arrives.
3. Who built the Freedom, and which side does Kira fly it for?
Z.A.F.T. built it, and Bandai's profile names Kira as the pilot. The suit leaves Z.A.F.T. when Lacus Clyne takes it and hands it over, after which Kira operates it alongside the Archangel.
4. What does the Full Burst pose involve?
Every fixed weapon firing forward at once: wing cannons swung out, waist railguns rotated to the front, hand weapons raised. The Real Grade and the Master Grade Ver.2.0 are both built with movable wings and cannons so the pose can be held on a shelf.
