ZGMF-2000 Gouf Ignited

ZGMF-2000 GOUF Ignited is ZAFT's close-combat mobile suit in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004, C.E. 73), and the production version of the ZGMF-X2000 prototype. GOUF is an acronym here, Guardian Of Unity Forerunner, and the machine is a New Millennium Series design rather than a descendant of Zeon's Gouf.

What it does in the story

The prototype loses the New Millennium competition to the ZAKU series, but its performance keeps the programme alive and a handful of units reach ace pilots. Heine Westenfluss gets an orange one and takes it aboard the Minerva. When ZAFT's production lines can no longer meet demand, the type is ordered into mass production, and Yzak Joule flies a white and grey custom during the assault on Requiem.

What makes it different

  • A heat rod retracts into each forearm. The Slayer Whip has a core of hyper-elastic steel and can vibrate at supersonic frequency, glowing red as it does. Besides whipping and entangling a target it delivers a shock on contact, which is enough to set off an enemy suit's equipment.
  • The forearms also carry beam guns. The Draupnir quadruple beam gun is short-ranged because its calibre is small, but it fires fast enough to build a wall of beams. That is how a Gouf Ignited herds an opponent into the range where the whips work.
  • The sword is physical and beam at once. The Tempest beam sword is sheathed in the spiked shield; drawn, it extends and emits laser blades on both sides of a physical edge. The shield is anti-beam coated and can be held or fixed to the forearm.
  • It can fly under its own power. The flight unit on its back carries wings with boosters built into them, enough for atmospheric flight with mobility close to that of the much lighter DINN. That is what made the machine worth producing once the war moved to Earth.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 19.20 m
  • 1/144: roughly 13.3 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Gouf Ignited the same machine as the One Year War Gouf?

No. They share a name and a close-combat brief, nothing else. This one was designed by ZAFT's Integrated Design Bureau for the New Millennium Series, and even the acronym is different, standing for Guardian Of Unity Forerunner.

2. What separates the ZGMF-X2000 from the ZGMF-2000?

The X marks the prototype, which was built around interchangeable arms and legs for different roles. Operability, cost and schedule problems killed that idea, so the production machine dropped the mechanism and the X with it, keeping the same specifications and weapons.

3. Whose orange Gouf Ignited is that?

Heine Westenfluss, a FAITH ace, had a prototype painted in his personal orange and assigned to the Minerva shortly after the Battle of Gulnahan. The machine was lost in the three-way engagement between the Minerva, the Earth Alliance with Orb, and the Archangel.

4. Why carry a physical sword in a beam era?

The Tempest is both. It has a solid edge with laser blades emitted on either side, which keeps a cutting weapon in the hand even when a target's defences are tuned against beams, and the shield doubles as its sheath.
