ZGMF-1000 Zaku Warrior

ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior is ZAFT's standard mobile suit in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004, C.E. 73). The name is an acronym for ZAFT Armored Keeper of Unity, and the machine is the first of the New Millennium Series built under the Junius Treaty.

What it does in the story

It wins the competition to become ZAFT's next mainstay, finishing ahead of the ZGMF-X2000 GOUF Ignited and the DOM Trooper, and the first machines go to red-coated pilots such as Lunamaria Hawke and to aces like Dearka Elsman. Older GINNs and GuAIZ Rs serve alongside it for much of the war. By C.E. 75 it is still the main suit, and ZAFT radicals use theirs to defend the rebuilt Requiem during the coup.

What makes it different

  • The Wizard System changes its job. Armament packs mount on the back as standard, though other attachment points exist. Swapping packs lets a single airframe cover work that used to need separate specialised machines, which is how ZAFT stayed inside the treaty's limits on how many mobile weapons it could keep.
  • The rifle feeds itself, not the suit. The MMI-M633 beam assault rifle runs off a replaceable drum magazine instead of the battery. Accuracy gives way to volume of fire, and the scattering beam shots are meant to catch more than one target in a pass.
  • The shield rides on the shoulder. It is mounted on the left shoulder rather than the forearm, which leaves both hands free for weapons. The shield carries an anti-beam coating, three spikes for striking, and hardpoints for two spare rifle magazines, and the beam tomahawk slides out of a slot near its top, grip first, ready to be thrown.
  • It runs on a battery by treaty. The Junius Treaty banned military use of Neutron Jammer Cancellers, so the nuclear reactor of the trial machine it descends from was replaced with a conventional battery system. Baseline performance still exceeds the GAT-X series Earth Alliance flew in the previous war.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 17.19 m
  • 1/144: roughly 11.9 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the ZAKU Warrior a descendant of the old Zaku II?

In name only. The initials were coined for this machine, and the design comes from ZAFT's own nuclear-powered trial type rather than from the One Year War Zaku line. The visual cues are a nod to the old suit, not shared hardware.

2. Which Wizard packs does the ZAKU Warrior use?

The packs bolt onto the back and change what the machine is for, from a gunner set built around a long-range cannon to a close-combat loadout. Because the attachment points are standardised, packs from outside manufacturers can be fitted too, which is where the less common variants come from.

3. Why put the shield on the shoulder?

So the hands stay free. The shield is wide enough to cover the torso, can move on its own, and stores both spare magazines and the beam tomahawk, so a pilot can reload and draw a melee weapon without reaching behind the machine.

4. What are the tubes running along the body?

They house the Multi-Dazzler system, which is there to confuse guided missiles rather than to vent heat. The same frame also carries four hand grenades in the side skirt, of fragmentation, high-explosive, incendiary, flash or smoke type.
