ZGMF-1000/M Blaze Zaku Warrior

ZGMF-1000/M Blaze ZAKU Warrior is ZAFT's high-mobility ZAKU in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004, C.E. 73). The /M marks the EX-M Blaze Wizard on a standard ZGMF-1000, its most common pack fit. Athrun Zala and Joule Team pilot Shiho Hahnenfuss are both recorded on it.

What it does in the story

Athrun takes a ZAKU Warrior into the hangar fight at Armory One on 2 October C.E. 73 and loses an arm to the stolen Second Stage Gundams before Shinn Asuka intervenes. Rebuilt around a Blaze Wizard, the type is his machine through the Break the World incident, where his suit is wrecked in the upper atmosphere.

What makes it different

  • The pack makes it a Blaze, not the airframe. The EX-M Blaze Wizard adds high-output thrusters and two launcher banks, and that is where the mobility comes from. Underneath is an ordinary ZAKU Warrior.
  • It stands three metres taller than the bare suit. Bandai lists the Blaze at 20.4 m against 17.19 m for the ZGMF-1000 alone, because the pack and its launchers sit above the shoulders.
  • Twenty-eight missiles ride on the back. Each AGM138 Firebee launcher holds fourteen rounds, mounted at the front of the pack so the bays stay visible once the Wizard is fitted.
  • Five grenade types fit one rack. Four grenades ride on the side skirt, and the rack takes fragmentation, high-explosive, thermite incendiary, flash or smoke bodies.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 20.4 m with the Blaze Wizard fitted, against 17.19 m for the bare ZAKU Warrior, per Bandai's published spec
  • 1/144: roughly 14 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 20.5 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Why was Athrun Zala flying a ZAKU Warrior?

He was at Armory One as Cagalli Yula Athha's escort for talks with the PLANT Supreme Council, not as an active pilot. A hangar ZAKU Warrior was what they could get into.

2. Who is Shiho Hahnenfuss?

A ZAFT pilot of the Joule Team and one of the two named Blaze ZAKU Warrior pilots. During the Break the World incident she has to pull away from the falling wreckage before the gravity field takes her.

3. Does the Blaze Wizard work under gravity?

Yes. Its thrusters are rated for Earth as well as space, and the type is fielded in both through the Second Alliance-PLANT War.

4. What happens to Athrun's suit?

It is critically damaged in the upper atmosphere during the Break the World incident. Shinn catches him with the Impulse, and Athrun's next machine is the Saviour.
