TMF/A-802 BuCUE is ZAFT's four-legged ground mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002–03, C.E. 70–71). The Asimov Design Bureau, ZAFT's ground-combat design team, drew it, and the TMF/A prefix stands for Terrestrial Maneuver Fighter/Attacker. Andrew Waltfeld's corps is the unit most closely tied to the type.
What it does in the story
ZAFT unveiled it on 15 March C.E. 70, and it made its combat debut on 30 May at the Battle of Suez, where Waltfeld's handling of the machine broke the Eurasian Federation's Linear Gun Tank corps at El Alamein. In C.E. 71 five BuCUEs of the Waltfeld Corps attack the Archangel after it lands in Africa, and large numbers are committed to Operation Spitbreak.
What makes it different
-
It runs on treads as well as legs.
Each leg carries caterpillar treads, so the suit switches between a four-legged stance for broken ground and a cruising mode that folds the legs down for flat desert and snow. Thrusters in the wings let it turn hard, and one machine was rated a match for a tank platoon.
-
The turret takes two different loads.
The base type has no fixed weapons. Its rotating back turret mounts either a twin 450 mm railgun with plasma-warhead rounds or a 13-tube 400 mm missile pod that fires in any direction, and the four-legged stance soaks up the recoil.
-
The late type got beam sabers first.
Because its shape was poor at close quarters, late production machines were given a pair of beam sabers in the head ahead of other ZAFT suits, built from technology taken off the G Weapons and from CGUE DEEP Arms data.
-
The belly is the weak point.
Armour is concentrated at the front, and a single hit under the hull can be critical. Folding into cruising mode covers the abdomen, so that mode earns its keep even when speed is not the point.
How big is it?
- Overall height: 11.07 m at the base of the turret, with a gross weight of 69.3 t, according to Bandai's official spec
- 1/144: roughly 7.7 cm, which covers the HG SEED kit

Frequently asked questions
1. Does the BuCUE walk or drive?
Both. The legs carry treads, and the suit drops into a folded cruising mode for open ground, which is faster than walking and protects the belly.
2. What does TMF/A stand for?
Terrestrial Maneuver Fighter/Attacker, the model prefix ZAFT gives its ground machines. It marks the suit as a land unit rather than a space one.
3. What replaced the BuCUE?
An improved model, the TMF/A-802W2 Kerberos BuCUE Hound, was developed between the two wars. The original stayed in service through the second war regardless, and appears at the Gulnahan Ravine and at Berlin.
4. Why does it carry no fixed guns?
The design puts everything into the turret so the load can be swapped for the mission: railguns against armour, missile pods against fortifications. The armament is optional for that reason.
