Mosasaurus on video

Mosasaurus

The Mosasaurus is the marine reptile that fills the lagoon at Jurassic World, the 2015 film that reopens the park on Isla Nublar. The animal is real, if extinct: Mosasaurus names the family of giant marine lizards that lived 82 to 66 million years ago.

What makes Mosasaurus stand out

  • Not a dinosaur. Mosasaurs are squamate reptiles, closer to monitor lizards and snakes. Four limbs shaped into paddles, a long tail with a down-turned fluke, a warm-blooded metabolism.
  • Built to bite. Robust jaws, dozens of cutting teeth, eyesight good enough to cover for a poor sense of smell. It likely hunted near the surface: fish, sharks, seabirds.
  • The lagoon show. Visitors watched it rise out of the pool to take a great white shark hung above the water, the image most merchandise is built around.
  • The name. Meuse lizard, for the Maastricht quarry where the first skulls turned up in the late 18th century. Cuvier called it an extinct marine lizard in 1808.

What this collection covers

Prime 1 Studio's Legacy Museum Collection 1/15 statue is close to a metre long, jaws open, tail breaking the surface, on a lagoon base with coral; the Bonus Version adds an Indominus rex skull. Bandai's Plannosaurus kit builds the skeleton, then layers skin over it, snap-fit and without nippers. The 1/32 Imaginary Skeleton kit is a fixed-pose skeleton about 350 mm long.
