Evangelion Unit-02 is the red Eva of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995–96, directed by Hideaki Anno). Unit-00 is a prototype and Unit-01 a test type; Unit-02 is the Production Model, the first machine designed for mass production and combat. It was assembled and activated in Germany, piloted by the Second Child, Asuka Langley Soryu.
What it does in the story
Unit-02 joins as the second operational Evangelion and stays in the field alongside Unit-01 for the rest of the series. The Rebuild films refit it under new designations, so these kits and figures cover both. Its biological core derives from Adam.
What makes it different
-
A production machine, not an experiment.
It exists to be built in numbers, which is why its design carries no experimental systems and a configuration meant to repeat.
-
Built in Japan, woken in Germany.
The machine was conceived and constructed in Japan, but assembly, activation experiments and pilot training happened in Germany.
-
Equipment sets change the silhouette.
The S-Type Equipment pack, the Beast transformation, and the Rebuild designations 02'β and New 02α each rebuild the outline, so two Unit-02 products can look like different machines.
