First taking to the skies in 1940, this remarkable aircraft saw a production run of 3,181 units from July 1942 to 1945. It earned its stripes in the Pacific War, notably in the challenging "Hump Crossing" over the Himalayas from 1942, delivering vital supplies from Assam in British India to Kunming in the Republic of China. As the backbone of U.S. military transport during its time, the C-46 was also embraced by the U.S. Marine Corps as the R5C. Its service extended through the Korean War, the Berlin Blockade air operations, the early stages of the Vietnam War, and it was even provided to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and the Republic of China Air Force. Today, several of these historic aircraft continue to serve in the private sector, particularly in Canada and other countries as transport aircraft.
