Initially developed as the T43 with a formidable 120mm gun and based on the T34 heavy tank, this model underwent several redesigns and modifications before being deployed to troops in West Germany. The U.S. Marine Corps further enhanced the design to create the T43E2, later known as the M103A1, and eventually introduced a Diesel engine variant, the M103A2, in 1961.
