Originally designed as the T43 heavy tank equipped with a 120mm gun and based on the T34 heavy tank, it underwent a transformation to become the T43E1. It proudly served troops in West Germany. In 1957, the U.S. Marine Corps introduced modifications to create the T43E2, later known as the M103A1. By 1961, the introduction of a Diesel engine led to the evolution of the M103A1E1 into the M103A2.
