Powered by the robust R&R Griffon Mk.61 engines and boasting a newly designed wing, this model represents a significant evolution of the iconic Spitfire fighter. With its armament of four cannons, this version was so distinct that it nearly received a new designation - the Victor. Making its debut just in time for the final battles of the war, the subsequent Mk.22 and Mk.24 versions, introduced post-war, showcased further enhancements including a lowered rear fuselage, a bubble-type canopy, and a redesigned empennage initially intended for the Spiteful. The Mk.22 variant, with a production run of 287 units, primarily served with RAuxAF squadrons across the British Isles until they were retired in 1955. Some were later refurbished and found new life in the air forces of South Rhodesia, Syria, and Egypt.
