Description
Discover the iconic Ki-43-I Ko Hayabusa fighter aircraft model kit, a masterpiece brought to you by Special Hobby. In December 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force embarked on a mission to develop a new fighter aircraft. Nakajima was chosen to design this revolutionary fighter without the need for a competition. This aircraft was envisioned to eventually replace the Ki-27, which had just been introduced. The development journey was extensive, necessitating numerous modifications to the airframe. Ultimately, thirteen prototypes were crafted before the Ki-43-I Ko, affectionately known as Hayabusa, was officially accepted by the IJAAF on January 1, 1941. Interestingly, series production had commenced as early as September 1940.
The Hayabusa made its combat debut over Malaya and Singapore, showcasing exceptional maneuverability that surpassed all Allied aircraft, dominating the skies with ease. However, combat experiences highlighted a critical flaw - the wings were prone to low strength and could disintegrate midair during intense maneuvers. Despite this, the Ki-43 continued to evolve through new versions, culminating in the Ki-43-III. Each iteration brought changes in cowling style, oil coolers, and increasingly heavier armament, making the Ki-43 the most widely used fighter by the IJAAF throughout the war.
