Description
Discover the legendary Bugatti 100P Racing Airplane, a masterpiece of aviation design conceived by the iconic automobile manufacturer Bugatti in France, 1938. Envisioned by Ettore Bugatti, the company's founder, alongside chief designer Louis de Monge, this aircraft was aimed at clinching victory in the prestigious "Deutsch de la Moult Cup" air race of 1940. Despite its ambitious goals, the Bugatti 100P was unfortunately not completed in time for the race due to the outbreak of World War II, leading to its concealment in a barn to escape the ravages of war. Rediscovered post-war, it now takes pride of place at the EAA AirVenture Museum in the United States, a testament to its enduring legacy.
Though the original Bugatti 100P never graced the skies, a dedicated project initiated in 2009 breathed life into its legacy, culminating in a replica's maiden flight in 2015. This aircraft is a marvel of engineering, boasting an all-wood monoplane construction with a sleek fuselage crafted from balsa wood and layered hardwood. Its design features include a forward wing, a distinctive V-shaped tail with integrated air intakes, and retractable landing gear for streamlined aerodynamics.
Powering this magnificent aircraft are two of Bugatti’s own Type 50C engines, each delivering 450 hp. These engines are ingeniously mounted in the fuselage behind the cockpit, driving a unique double-rotating propeller at the nose, a design choice that underscores Bugatti's innovative spirit. With a planned maximum speed of approximately 805 km/h, the Bugatti 100P was poised to redefine the limits of air racing.
