Description
Discover the remarkable Hanomag SSA-100 heavy cargo tractor, a pivotal piece of engineering that began its journey in 1936. With its capability to tow two trailers, boasting an overall weight of 20 tons at a brisk pace of 40km/h, it revolutionized the transportation of heavy cargo. Offering a cost-effective solution, nearly half as cheap as towing with a similar vehicle, the SSA-100, later known as the Giant, quickly became a staple in both civilian and military sectors. By the onset of World War II, the Wehrmacht had already earmarked all new vehicles for military purposes, utilizing the SS-100 extensively across engineering and transport units for heavy payload transport, and by Luftwaffe units for towing large aircraft and heavy ordnance. The demand for these tractors was so high that licensed production commenced at the Fross-Bussing Company in Vienna. Despite the war's end, production continued, adapting to the post-war market needs, with a total of 1,112 SS-100 tractors produced until 1950. The design of the SS-100 featured a robust frame made from extruded "U" profiles, solid axles suspended by leaf springs with reinforced rear ones, and was powered by a D 85S 6-cylinder diesel engine, delivering 100hp. This engine, coupled with a dry multi-plate clutch and a four-speed ZF transmission, allowed the tractor to carry a weight ranging from 5,000 to 6,600kg. Equipped with a 250-litre diesel fuel tank and an efficient fuel consumption rate, it could travel up to 500km on a single tank.
