タイフーンの開発時、ネピア・セイバーエンジン搭載のタイプN、ロールスロイス・バルチュアエンジン搭載のタイプRの開発を進め、1939年10月にトーネードと名付けられたタイプRが先行して初飛行しました。 タイフーンと命名されたタイプNは、エンジン自体の開発が遅れ1940年2月に初飛行し、高速飛行特性はかなり良いが離陸中に右へ振られる傾向が大きいと判断されました。 その後、トーネードは供給されたエンジンが不調で、実用化が困難になり生産を中止し、一方のタイフーンは、新型セイバーIIAエンジン搭載のIAが生産され、続いてすぐに機関砲装備のIBが生産されて実用化が急がれましたが充分な実用試験結果がでないまま実戦配備されたため各所にトラブルが発生し、尾部全体が破損するという致命的な事故が起きてしまいました。 しかし当時、低空ではFw190より速い機体はタイフーンしかなく4門の20mm機関砲は、一撃で敵を粉砕しました。問題の尾部の欠陥も解決し、1942年11月からドイツ占領下のヨーロッパ大陸への攻撃では飛行場、艦船、鉄道などを破壊し大きな戦果をあげました。 《データ》乗員：1名全幅：12.59m全長：9.93m全高：4.49mエンジン：ネピア・セイバー IIA液冷式24気筒H型(出力2,180hp)最大速度：652km/h固定武装：20mmイスパノ機関砲×4初飛行：1940.2.24
