Discover the iconic 18-ton M4 High Speed Tractor, a pivotal piece of military history, crafted by the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This model, which was produced between 1943 and 1945, played a crucial role during its time. Originally based on the T9 and T9E1 designs, it was standardized as the Medium Tractor M4 and later known as the High Speed Tractor M4. Alongside the M5 and M6 High Speed Tractors, it marked a significant advancement over the older commercial-type crawler tractors, meeting the modern, mechanized army's evolving needs.
Designed primarily as a prime mover for the 90mm antiaircraft 3-inch gun, the M4 High Speed Tractor was not only capable of transporting crew but also carried a basic supply of ammunition. Its production kicked off in March 1943, and by June 1945, a total of 5,552 M4 tractors had been assembled, with an additional 259 M4A1 tractors produced between June and August 1945.
