日本のモータースポーツの歴史は、1963年に開催された第1回日本グランプリ（GP）と共に始まりました。当時の国産メーカーは過酷なモータースポーツに積極的に取り組んでおり1965年トヨタはTMSC（トヨタ・モータースポーツ・クラブ）を結成。翌年第3回日本GPにトヨタ初のDOHCエンジン搭載モデル2000GTで初参戦しています。 1970年10月にデビューしたセリカ1600GTは開発段階からレース仕様の開発が進められていました。コンピュータと風洞実験で形状が決められたフロ ントスポイラーやリアスポイラー、ヘッドランプカバーやオーバーフェンダーを追加しています。2T-G型エンジンはドライサンプ化などによりパワーアップ し、サスペンションアームは全面的に作り直されるなどライバルに対抗できる強いツーリングカーに育てるという目的で開発されました。 セリカ1600GTが初めてレースに出場したのは1971年11月、富士で開催された日本オールスターレースです。3台出場したTS-bクラスで1〜3位を独占する鮮烈なデビューでした。1972年に入るとセリカの快進撃は続き、3月の全日本鈴鹿自動車レースでツーリングカークラスで優勝。同年4月、富士で開催のレース・ド・ニッポンにおいてスカイランGT-Rやフェアレディ240Zを押さえ総合優勝を果たすなど上位を押さえるポテンシャルを発揮しました。 5月3日富士で開催された日本GPではセリカが1位、2位と4位の上位をほぼ独占、3位にもカローラ・レビンが入りトヨタは圧倒的な強さを見せつけました。
