In October of 1936, the first Panzer I Ausf.A made its way to Seville, marking the beginning of a new era in armored warfare. These tanks, initially used for training and maneuvers, showcased the challenges and innovations of early tank design, including the critical need for crew protection. Despite not seeing combat initially, the Ausf.A's design flaws, such as the unarmored bulkhead separating the engine from the crew compartment, were quickly identified and addressed with additional armor plating.
The tank's first combat experience during the Spanish Civil War highlighted its limitations against infantry and the necessity for enhanced firepower, leading to the innovative installation of the Italian Breda 20mm machine gun. This adaptation, along with the unique circumstances surrounding its repainting, adds a fascinating layer to its history.
