Zhang Fei God Gundam

Of the three Shu heroes in SD Gundam World Sangoku Soketsuden, Zhang Fei God Gundam is the one who hits first: the 2019 series recast the Three Kingdoms story with Gundam-type leads, and gave him the GF13-017NJII God Gundam of Mobile Suit G Gundam in SD proportions. He quits Luoyang alongside Guan Yu to look for Zhuge Liang.

What it does in the story

The trio forms on the road. Zhang Fei had served Luoyang's previous lord with Guan Yu, and the two of them left the city on the same errand before falling in with Liu Bei. The series plays him against Guan Yu's caution: careless, prone to mistakes, and useful anyway, because a charge that ignores the odds is sometimes what breaks a fight open.

What makes it different

• His spear is thrown as often as it is swung. The dabou joins a long shaft to a blade that kinks like a snake. Zhang Fei does his work at close range, so he tends to hurl the weapon and close the distance behind it rather than fence with it.
• The finisher is a punch. Bakunetsu Enshoken wraps both fists in flame-like energy and drives it in at full power. It is the one attack the series gives him that ignores the spear entirely, which is why he reads as a brawler who happens to carry a polearm.
• A second form arrives after the war. Yan Huang Zhang Fei God Gundam is his later state, reached once he has mastered combat and taken on the rebuilding of Luoyang. It swaps the spear for gauntlets that shrug off heat and a punch that concentrates the energy of his whole body; that version was released as its own kit in February 2020.
