ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam

ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam is the general-purpose prototype of ZAFT's Second Stage Series in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004, C.E. 73). Where its four siblings were each built for one environment, the Impulse covers every role by changing Silhouette packs, and it is the only one of the five with a separable cockpit fighter. Shinn Asuka takes it into the war first; Lunamaria Hawke later flies the same airframe.

What it does in the story

The suit was designed together with the battleship Minerva, which carries a catapult built for it alone, and it launches in three parts that join in midair. Shinn uses it to destroy more than a dozen enemy warships and many mobile suits, including the stolen Abyss Gundam, and to beat the Freedom by swapping damaged modules during the fight. Once he moves to the Destiny, the Impulse goes to Lunamaria for Operation Ragnarök.

What makes it different

  • The suit is three aircraft that become one. The cockpit rides in the YFX-M56S Core Splendor, a small transformable flyer, while the chest and legs travel separately as the Chest Flyer and Leg Flyer. They dock after launch, so a wrecked section can be replaced on its own instead of costing the whole machine.
  • Silhouettes change the role, not the airframe. The back hardpoints take the α Force, β Sword and γ Blast packs, each with its own weapons, and each one reconfigures the Variable Phase Shift armour to match. One airframe in several roles also kept ZAFT inside the Junius Treaty's limits on mobile suit numbers, and an unmanned Silhouette Flyer can bring a pack out during battle.
  • Its own weapons are deliberately few. Without a pack the Impulse has two 20mm CIWS in the chest, a pair of folding anti-armour knives in the side skirts, a shield and a beam rifle. Everything that makes it a bomber, a swordsman or a dogfighter lives in the pack.
  • The rifle comes from the Freedom's family. The MA-BAR72 is an enhanced version of the rifle carried by the Freedom and the Justice, built on the Saviour's weapon as the base.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 17.76 m with a full weight of 63.54 t, per Bandai's published spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12.3 cm
  • 1/100: roughly 17.8 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Does the Impulse Gundam come with a Silhouette pack?

The airframe is built to take any of the three, and the pack is what gives it reach, speed or striking power. On its own it fights with the chest CIWS, the two folding knives, the shield and the beam rifle.

2. What happens if a module is destroyed?

It gets swapped. The Minerva keeps Chest and Leg Flyers ready, so a suit that loses a leg can be rebuilt and launched again, and one machine covers roles that would otherwise need three.

3. How did Shinn Asuka beat the Freedom Gundam?

By using the modular build as a repair system. He replaced damaged sections during the engagement instead of withdrawing, so the Impulse kept coming back intact while the older suit absorbed damage it could not shed.

4. Is the Impulse nuclear-powered?

No. The Junius Treaty banned Neutron Jammer Cancellers, so the Impulse runs on an improved battery that a supporting ship tops up by beam, which is why the suit is tied so closely to the Minerva.
