ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II

ZGMF/A-262B Strike Freedom Gundam Type II is the Strike Freedom rebuilt for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom (2024, C.E. 75). Erica Simmons took the damaged ZGMF-X20A as a testbed and returned it in this form, and Kira Yamato flies it for Compass from the battleship Millennium.

What it does in the story

It leaves a hangar on Akatsuki Island to replace machines the Millennium has lost, and its first job is rescuing Lacus Clyne: Athrun flies it to pull Shura Serpentine's Shi-ve.A away while the strike team slips past the Artemis barrier. Kira then takes it against the Cal-re.A and the Shi-ve.A, losing most of its weapons before the Proud Defender docks.

What makes it different

  • It has a second seat. The new panoramic cockpit takes a co-pilot to the right of the pilot, a layout the Strike Freedom lacked. The film names no second crew member, so the seat is a design change.
  • The DRAGOONs can build a wall. Each of the eight Super DRAGOON wings gained a beam shield emitter, and several pods working together project one large shield instead of eight small ones.
  • The wing pack comes off whole. The Super DRAGOON wings eject as a unit and the suit docks with the MDE262S Proud Defender to become the ZGMF/A-262PD-P Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam, mid-battle rather than in a hangar.
  • The powerplant is a fusion reactor. Where the Strike Freedom ran a hyper-deuterion engine, the Type II carries an ultracompact nuclear fusion reactor, with Picus II CIWS, a Tvashtr hyper impulse gun in the abdomen and Volans Hasta railguns.
