ZGMF-1001/M Blaze Zaku Phantom is a ZAFT mobile suit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004, Cosmic Era 73). It is the ZGMF-1001 Zaku Phantom fitted with the EX-M Blaze Wizard on its back, and it is the machine Rey Za Burrel flies out of the Minerva through the first half of the series.
What it does in the story
Rey's white Blaze Zaku Phantom is launched while the Minerva is buried under an asteroid, and he fights Neo Roanoke's squadron to buy the ship time. Rey then flies it covering the Joule Team's Meteor Breakers as the Junius Seven wreckage comes apart, runs decoy at the Lohengrin Gate, and holds the top of the Minerva at the Dardanelles and at Crete, where the suit loses both arms and is written off. Heine Westenfluss flies an orange one earlier in the war and Dearka Elsman a black one in the last weeks.
What makes it different
-
The Blaze Wizard is swapped on, not built in.
ZAFT's Wizard System lets the Zaku Phantom take different backpacks, and the EX-M Blaze Wizard is the mobility pack. It adds high-output thrusters for space and for use under gravity, plus two AGM138 Firebee launchers at the front carrying fourteen missiles apiece.
-
Both shoulders are shields, so both hands stay free.
Each shoulder carries an anti-beam-coated shield that can move on its own, is studded with three spikes for close work, and has hardpoints for two spare rifle magazines. Each shield also stows a beam tomahawk that slides out grip-first when it is needed.
-
The rifle feeds from a drum instead of the suit.
The MMI-M633 beam assault rifle does not draw power from the mobile suit's battery; it runs on a replaceable drum magazine. Accuracy suffers for it, but the spread lets one burst catch several targets at once.
-
It is a different base machine from the Zaku Warrior.
The Blaze Zaku Phantom is built on the ZGMF-1001 Zaku Phantom, ZAFT's commander type. The Zaku Warrior is the ZGMF-1000 line that fills out the rest of the formation, such as Lunamaria Hawke's Gunner ZAKU Warrior, which is listed as a ZGMF-1000/A1 in the same battles.
How big is it?
- Overall height: 20.4 m
- 1/144: roughly 14.2 cm
- 1/100: roughly 20.4 cm

Frequently asked questions
1. What is the difference between a Blaze Zaku Phantom and a Blaze Zaku Warrior?
The base machine. The Phantom is the ZGMF-1001 commander type and the Warrior is the ZGMF-1000, and both can be fitted with a Wizard pack, so the Blaze version of each exists but they are not the same suit underneath.
2. Which pilots flew the Blaze Zaku Phantom in SEED Destiny?
Rey Za Burrel in a white custom, Heine Westenfluss in orange, Dearka Elsman in black, and Riika Sheder in the Destiny Astray side story. The colours are pilot customs on the same frame.
3. How many missiles does the Blaze Wizard carry?
Twenty-eight, fourteen in each of the two Firebee launchers. The launchers sit at the front of the pack, so the missile bays stay visible with the pack mounted.
4. Why did Rey stop using this suit?
It was wrecked at Crete. After losing its arms to a Murasame attack and then taking fire from the Freedom Gundam, Rey's Zaku Phantom was judged beyond repair and he moved to the Legend Gundam.
