ZGMF-1000/A1 Gunner Zaku Warrior

ZGMF-1000/A1 Gunner ZAKU Warrior is ZAFT's artillery suit from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (2004, C.E. 73). It is the ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior with the EX-A1 Gunner Wizard on its back, one of the packs that let ZAFT change a suit's role without a new machine. Lunamaria Hawke is issued one aboard the battleship Minerva.

What it does in the story

Lunamaria's red Gunner ZAKU fights from the Minerva's first sortie, when Phantom Pain steals three prototype Gundams from Armory One, and she chases those suits to Earth. Once the Second Alliance-PLANT War begins she often stands on the ship's deck to shoot down incoming machines. Dearka Elsman also flies one during the Break the World incident, and the type serves with the Joule Team and at Messiah.

What makes it different

• Its main gun is longer than the suit is tall. The M1500 Orthros beam cannon rides folded on the Gunner Wizard and unfolds under the right shoulder to its full length. Recoil and a slow rate of fire mean it is braced and fired with both hands, and the pack carries its own large-capacity energy tank.
• The shield is mounted on the shoulder, not the arm. That leaves both hands free for cannon or rifle. The shield has an anti-beam coating, three spikes and a mount that moves independently; its back carries hardpoints for two spare rifle magazines, and the beam tomahawk slides out of a slot near the top, grip first.
• The beam rifle is magazine-fed. The MMI-M633 beam assault rifle does not draw on the suit's battery. It runs on a replaceable drum-type magazine, which is why the design leans on rate of fire and hitting power at some cost in accuracy, and it stows on the rear waist armour.
• One body, three Wizards. The Gunner is a pack, not a separate machine: the same ZAKU Warrior becomes a Blaze or Slash suit by swapping the Wizard. Four grenades of several types ride on the side skirt armour.

How big is it?

• Overall height: 20.50 m
• 1/144: roughly 14 cm
• 1/100: roughly 20.5 cm
