Zero Gundam

Zero Gundam is the knight of the SD Gundam Gaiden stories, catalogued as Devil Dragon Blade Zero Gundam (魔竜剣士ゼロガンダム) in Shin SD Gundam Gaiden: Knight Gundam Monogatari and Gold Saga. He is the son of Dragon Knight Falco Gundam and carries the Thunder Clan's sword.

What it does in the story

His story opens in Granada, where his father hands him the Thunder Sword and vanishes into a storm, and turns on his hunt for Mirage King Vice Gundam. Along the way he recovers the Silver Halberd, awakens the Dragon Machine Dragoon, and becomes a Holy Dragon Knight.

What makes it different

  • The Thunder Sword picks its own owner. Clan law stops Zero drawing it until he beats the three other candidates, Knight Sardis, Knight Mezaldan and Knight V-Square. He loses to V-Square and the sword chooses him anyway.
  • The suit carries two swords. Besides the Thunder Sword, Zero is listed with a Falcon Sword, also called the Lead Sword, which he uses while fighting for the right to wield the Thunder Sword.
  • Two kits, two titles. The 1994 CB11 kit is sold as Holy Dragon Knight Zero Gundam Jr., the title Zero takes once he inherits his father's key; the later Legend BB kit uses the earlier Devil Dragon Blade name.
  • It also appears as a Gunpla. Lady Kawaguchi fields a Devil Dragon Blade Zero Gundam in Gundam Build Fighters Try, which is how the design reaches people who never read the Gaiden stories.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is this the same Zero as the knight in SD Gundam Force?

No. Zero the Winged Knight, the Lacroa character with the Vatras Sword, is a different Gundam from a different series.

2. Why is it called both Devil Dragon Blade and Holy Dragon Knight?

They mark two points in one story. Zero ends the Knight Gundam Monogatari arc as a Holy Dragon Knight after taking the key his father leaves him.

3. Which kit is the older design?

The CB11 kit, released in December 1994 in Bandai's SD Gundam Chibi Senshi series. The Legend BB Maryu Kenshi kit is the later, larger take.

4. What is the Silver Halberd?

A sacred weapon for machine soldiers, offered as the prize of the Holy Knight Tournament in Granada. When Gemon's Xamlord seizes it, Zero knocks it free with help from Cyclone Knight Prost.
