YF-21

The YF-21 is General Galaxy's entry in Project Super Nova, the 2040 fly-off at the centre of Macross Plus (1994); Guld Goa Bowman was its development lead and test pilot.

What it does in the story

Super Nova ran on Eden against Shinsei's YF-19, and the two aircraft carried their pilots' shared past into the trials.

What makes it different

  • Flying by thought. The BDI system links pilot to airframe: sensor images project into the brain and intent becomes control input, wings included.
  • A battle suit in disguise. Its battroid mode descends from the Zentradi Queadluun-Rau, and the limbs detach for a limiter-off High Manoeuvre Mode.
  • Beaten on cost. The trials were close; BDI and the morphing wing were too costly to mass-produce, so the VF-19 won and this design returned as the VF-22.

How big is it?

  • Fighter mode: 19.62 m long, 15.36 m span, 4.04 m tall.
  • Weight: 9,550 kg empty.

What this collection covers

Three releases: Hasegawa's 1/72 kit, the DX Chogokin YF-21 in Guld Goa Bowman colours, and HG 1/100 YF-21.

Frequently asked questions

1. Why no cockpit framing?

The canopy is a sensor surface; the pilot sees through BDI rather than glass.

2. What became of it?

It entered service as the VF-22 Sturmvogel II in 2042.
