XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock

XXXG-01SR Gundam Sandrock is the fourth of Operation Meteor's five Gundams in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (1995, After Colony 195). Instructor H built it in the L4 colonies under the protection of the Winner family, and Quatre Raberba Winner pilots it.

What it does in the story

Sandrock is the desert fighter of the group and the one wired to lead: it was designed as a command unit for the Maganac Corps and for coordinating the other four Gundams. Quatre scuttled it at a Singapore spaceport to cover Duo and Wufei's escape, and the Maganac Corps recovered the wreck and restored it. It was later rebuilt for space as the Sandrock Custom.

What makes it different

  • The heat shotels are the whole design. A curved heat blade in each hand, modelled on the Ethiopian shotel, and with both hands the suit can cut an enemy in half. They can be thrown as well, and they ride on the backpack between fights.
  • Shield, backpack and blades combine. The Cross Crusher locks the two shotels into the shield and backpack so the machine can catch an enemy between the blades and shear through it. Bandai's notes say the assembly will crush a tank in a single blow.
  • The shield is a cobra head. Two claws form the fangs and two shield flashers form the eyes. The flashers fire a blinding burst to break up an attack, and the shield itself carries anti-beam coating.
  • It is the command machine, not just a brawler. Sandrock carries reinforced communications and analysis gear for running the Maganac Corps, plus a forehead sub-camera that keeps working in a sandstorm. Its self-destruct is also the odd one out: the hatch opens, the pilot leaves, and the suit walks forward before it goes up.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 16.5 m head height and 7.5 t, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 11.5 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. What makes the Sandrock a desert machine?

It was designed for high and low temperatures and broken ground, with armour heavier than the other Gundams' so it can take hits while closing to melee range. The forehead sub-camera is there specifically because a sandstorm blinds ordinary optics.

2. What happened to the Sandrock after Quatre destroyed it?

The Maganac Corps recovered the wreck and restored it, and Quatre found it again in time to help them beat off an OZ attack on their headquarters. He then took it into space, where a ground-use machine was out of its element until it was rebuilt as the Sandrock Custom.

3. What is a shotel?

A curved sword from Ethiopia, and the shape is why the Sandrock's blades hook rather than run straight. The heat version adds a cutting edge that stays effective against armour in any environment, and it can also be thrown.

4. Does the Sandrock have any ranged weapons?

Only the shoulder homing missiles, which are small and self-guiding and are described as its sole long-range armament. Everything else in the loadout is built for contact, which is why the suit depends on the Maganac Corps and the other pilots for covering fire.
