XM-X9999 Cross Bone Gundam Maoh

XM-X9999 Cross Bone Gundam Maoh is a Gunpla from Gundam Build Fighters (2013), built and flown by Mao Yasaka of the Gunpla Shingyo School. It is a custom of the XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1 that also inherits parts and ideas from Mao's earlier Gundam X Maoh, so it belongs to the tournament rather than to the Universal Century.

What it does in the story

Mao appears with it in the closing stretch of the series, episodes 23 to 25, after his Gundam X Maoh was wrecked by Julian Mackenzie's F91 Imagine and he was out of the individual competition. The new machine takes him into the operation against the giant Arista at A Baoa Qu.

What makes it different

  • The satellite cannon is in the chest. The Skull Satellite Cannon replaces the Crossbone Gundam's core fighter and fires from the mouth of the skull ornament on the chest, which opens first. Mounting it in the torso leaves both hands free for other weapons, and it can fire again after a short recharge, though not continuously.
  • The lost thrusters were replaced by mirrors. Cutting the core fighter out also removed the suit's main thrusters, so the X-shaped Reflector Mirror Unit on the backpack took over propulsion, working like the large reflector panels on the Gundam X and Gundam X Maoh. Reflector parts from the earlier Gunpla are scattered over the body.
  • It fights with bone-shaped gun-swords. The pair of Crossbone Gun & Swords are built from the thruster units of the original core fighter. Each one throws a beam blade or fires beam shots from its emitter, and its sides can be superheated to parry, which makes it a single answer to both a saber and a pistol.
  • The daggers are heated by the legs. Two heat daggers sit in the calves, one per leg, and their blades are warmed by leftover heat from the leg thrusters instead of a dedicated element. They are usually drawn by hand but can also slide out of the soles as a surprise.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 15.9 m with a full weight of 25.4 t, per the suit's published spec
  • 1/144: roughly 11 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Cross Bone Gundam Maoh a real Crossbone Gundam?

It is a Gunpla built by Mao Yasaka on the XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1, then modified to carry over traits from his own Gundam X Maoh. In the story it exists only as a model taking part in Gunpla Battle.

2. How does the Skull Satellite Cannon differ from the Gundam X's?

It is the same kind of weapon moved into the chest: the skull ornament's mouth opens and the cannon fires from there. The placement is what frees the hands, and the recharge gap between shots is short but not zero.

3. What are the bone-shaped weapons?

The Crossbone Gun & Swords, made from the thruster units of the Crossbone Gundam's core fighter. Each can project a beam blade, fire beam shots, or parry with superheated sides, and they hang on the side armour when not in use.

4. Which kit builds this machine?

The HGBF 1/144 kit, which is the only plastic model of the Maoh. At that scale the finished model stands about 11 cm tall.
