VF-11B Thunderbolt

The VF-11B Thunderbolt is the U.N. Forces' main production variable fighter in Macross Plus, the machine Isamu Dyson flies before the YF-19.

What it does in the story

Super Nova's 2040 fly-off on Eden measured the prototypes against the B, the service aircraft of the day.

What makes it different

  • A gunpod with a bayonet. The Howard GU-15 hides a retractable blade for battroid melee; the C traded it for a cheaper pod.
  • Rocket booster for the chase. Solid rockets above and below the fuselage, five minutes of burn, no head laser or gunpod while fitted.
  • The standard machine. It was the fighter most pilots flew.

How big is it?

  • Fighter mode: 15.51 m long, 11.20 m span, 3.49 m tall.
  • Performance: Mach 3.5+ at 10,000 m.

What this collection covers

Two Hasegawa 1/72 kits: the fighter with the rocket booster fitted, and the standard B with its 30 mm gunpod, linked wings and a seated pilot.

Frequently asked questions

1. Why the rocket booster?

Test gear for chasing the YF-21, not a combat fit: five minutes of burn and no gunpod.

2. How does the B differ from the C?

The C is the later avionics upgrade, with a revised canopy cover, canard and gunpod, and no bayonet.
