Toshiro Hijikata

Toshiro Hijikata is vice commander of the Shinsengumi in Gintama, Hideaki Sorachi's manga, serialised in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2003 to 2018. In an Edo period occupied by aliens, he is the tactician behind the shogunate's sword police.

What makes Toshiro Hijikata stand out

• The demon vice-chief. Oni no Fukuchō is the job talking: a ruthless fighter, a strict leader, hot-tempered enough to threaten subordinates with seppuku. He is fiercely loyal to commander Isao Kondo.
• Mayonnaise on everything. Nicknamed Mayorā for burying every meal under it, he carries mayo-bottle-shaped objects, cigarette lighter included, and smokes constantly.
• He was nearly the lead. Sorachi was a Shinsengumi fan and first designed Hijikata as the protagonist, then kept him as a supporting lead when he could not shake the character.
• Set against Gintoki. The two treat everything as a contest, and share a fear of ghosts and dentists.
