TIE Fighter

The TIE/ln is the Imperial Navy's standard starfighter, built by Sienar Fleet Systems around two ion engines and a ball cockpit. TIE reads Twin Ion Engine.

What it does in the story

It is the Empire's default fighter through the original trilogy, from the chase after the Tantive IV to the screens around the Death Star.

What makes it different

• Two engines, little else. No shields and no hyperdrive, which keeps it small enough to launch in wings.
• The wings are the structure. Hexagonal solar panels serve as radiators and as the silhouette seen from below.
• Guns, not missiles. A pair of SFS L-s1 laser cannons, later replaced by L-s7.2 models.

How big is it?

• Full size: 7.24 m long, 6.7 m wide, 8.82 m tall.
• 1/72 kit: About 100 mm long, with cockpit interior and a Death Star base.
• Vehicle Model: Palm-sized, boxed with a TIE Advanced.
