Tenrei Gundam

Tenrei Gundam is BB Senshi No. 158, released in March 1996 in Cho SD Sengoku Den: Bujin Kirahagane, the eighth Musha Gundam series (1996-1997). The story ran as a Comic World strip in the kit manuals and as a manga by Masahiro Kanda in Comic BomBom, set fifteen years after the previous series.

What it does in the story

The war is between the Gundam Corps and the Hyakki Yakou, a host of monsters laying waste to the land. Tenrei enters it as a warrior with no memory: he cannot say who he is, but he can still tell good from evil, and he chooses to stand with the Corps. His missing past is one of the threads the series uses to pull the story along.

What makes it different

  • Its name was a placeholder that turned out to be real. Juuha Gundam named him Tenrei on impulse, from his appearance, and it later turned out to be the name he had lost.
  • It carries the series' signature finish. Kirahagane was a special surface treatment applied to many kits in this run, most heavily to the great generals' wing parts. It became hard to produce, and the kits were later reissued as Kirahagane Gokusai with seals standing in for the treated parts.
  • One sword, one technique. The armament is a single Reimeito sword, and shifting into its combat form lets it use the Kidou Ougi: Kibasenkuuzan.

Frequently asked questions

1. Which series is Tenrei Gundam from?

The eighth Musha Gundam series, Bujin Kirahagane, which ran in 1996 and 1997. Its cast is modelled largely on characters and machines from New Mobile Report Gundam Wing.

2. What is kirahagane?

A special finish applied to parts of many kits in this run, giving detail and colour that ordinary plastic could not hold. The affected kits later came back as Kirahagane Gokusai with seals in place of the treated parts.

3. Is BB-167 the same machine as this kit?

Only within the story, where Tenrei is reborn as Kishin Daishogun Shiryuou. The BB-167 kit is presented as a strengthened form of Shin Godomaru rather than an upgrade of BB-158.
