SYSTEM-∀99 Turn A Gundam on video

SYSTEM-∀99 Turn A Gundam

SYSTEM-∀99 ∀ Gundam is the title machine of ∀ Gundam (1999, Correct Century 2345), and most of the cast simply call it the White Doll. Loran Cehack, a Moonrace scout who has been living on Earth, pilots it for the Inglessa Militia.

What it does in the story

Loran and Sochie Heim find it outside Nocis, the Inglessan capital, where it passes for a statue used in a coming-of-age ritual. When Dianna Counter's forces attack the city, the statue turns out to be a working mobile suit, and the Militia organises its resistance around it. Data the crew later recovers from the Dark History reframes what the machine was actually built to do.

What makes it different

  • The Moonlight Butterfly breaks matter down. Countless nanomachines pour from its back and spread like butterflies. They disintegrate anything they reach, whether artificial or organic, and the same cloud can be turned to defence by swallowing beam fire and explosions.
  • It flies on an I-Field Beam Drive. Rather than a conventional frame, I-field beams generated inside the body are shaped to move the suit, so the interior is largely hollow and the chest can be loaded with weapons. The DHGCP reactor's output shifts while running and reduces the machine's effective weight, which is part of how a machine this heavy moves the way it does.
  • The armour repairs itself. Nano-Skin, a layer of self-repairing nanomachines, covers the shell and protects it at molecular level. The spherical head is a sensor cluster, its cheek guards are the parts that read as a moustache, and the seat's Spine Pulse Sensor picks up the pilot's thoughts to drive the suit.
  • Six silos sit in the chest. They accept missile pods, beam drive units or other loads, and in the series the Militia fills them with its own missiles; two were used to carry old nuclear warheads for disposal. The legs carry feather-like arrays of tiny thruster nozzles, and the thrust they produce is enough to push a battleship backwards.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 20.0 m, according to the official ∀ Gundam site
  • 1/144: roughly 13.9 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Why is it called the Turn A Gundam?

The model number is SYSTEM-∀99 and ∀ is the symbol for "for all", which the series reads as Turn A. Inside the story almost nobody uses that name: to the people of Inglessa and to the Moonrace it is the White Doll.

2. What does the Moonlight Butterfly actually do?

It releases a cloud of nanomachines that dismantle matter on contact, and the same cloud can absorb incoming beams and explosions. The Dark History records it being used to end a civilisation, which is why the machine is treated with fear once its past surfaces.

3. Does the Turn A fight the Turn X?

Yes, at Lost Mountain, and both machines use the Moonlight Butterfly against each other. Neither cloud consumes the other, and the two suits end the duel in close combat instead.

4. Does the Turn A belong to the Universal Century?

It belongs to the Correct Century, which counts from the end of a war that destroyed the previous civilisation. Its technology predates that calendar by a very long time, and the Dark History carries records of the earlier space wars it was built for.
