STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam

STTS-909 Rising Freedom Gundam is Kira Yamato's machine in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom (2024, C.E. 75). It is a new suit, built in Orb for Compass to replace the Strike Freedom, and it is the first transformable mobile suit Kira has flown. Variable Phase Shift armour and a frame shared with the Immortal Justice are part of the specification.

What it does in the story

Compass sends it out most often against Blue Cosmos. At Aldrin City, a ZAFT-run special economic zone in Africa, it holds the line during a Blue Cosmos attack and brings down a Destroy Gundam on its own, then disables the ZAFT GINNs that keep pursuing the retreating force. Later it flies on the Compass side of a joint operation at Eldore alongside the Eurasian Federation and the Kingdom of Foundation.

What makes it different

  • It has a flight mode. Compass moves between Earth and space constantly, so the suit converts into an MA form for travel. The mechanism comes from Orb's Murasame and was simplified to cut maintenance, and positronic interference lets it climb into orbit without boosters.
  • The Proud Defender went to another suit. A new backpack unit was planned for this machine and would have raised its combat performance, but it was not finished in time. It ended up as part of the Mighty Strike Freedom, which is a separate machine rather than a later form of this one.
  • The wings hold the heavy guns. A pair of 400 mm hyper impulse guns called Sturmsvaha sit in the wings and swing over the shoulders to fire. With the waist railguns and the beam rifle they make up Full Burst Mode, which the Multi Lock-On System can point at several targets at once but which only fires forward.
  • The head breaks the family pattern. It is the only unit in the Freedom line with no mouth vents, with blue eyes rather than yellow and a chin that is not red. The crest reads AUMENTO 909, Italian for rising.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 17.80 m, with a gross weight of 67.90 t, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12.4 cm, which covers the HGCE kit

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Rising Freedom the same suit as the Strike Freedom?

No. It is a new machine from the 2024 film, designed using the Strike Freedom's operational data and built for Compass. It is also more compact than the earlier Freedom-series suits.

2. Is it the same as the Mighty Strike Freedom?

No. The Mighty Strike Freedom carries the Proud Defender backpack that was originally meant for this suit, and it is counted as its own machine.

3. Why does it transform at all?

Because of how Compass operates. The unit shuttles between Earth and space, so a form that can travel under its own power was written into the design, including the climb to orbit.

4. What does AUMENTO 909 on the head crest mean?

Aumento is Italian for rising, and 909 is the model number. The suit's working name during planning was Supreme Freedom, and Rising is the name it shipped with.
