What makes Steppenwolf stand out
War as a family trade.
Kirby wrote him as the soldier of a ruling house: his raid on New Genesis kills Avia, Izaya's wife, and starts the war between the two planets.
Nephew above him.
Darkseid is his sister's son, which puts Steppenwolf close to the throne without holding it.
The film version serves.
In Zack Snyder's Justice League he leads an army of Parademons to take Earth for his overlord Darkseid, played by Ciarán Hinds.
