The Arcadia is the space battleship captained by Harlock in Leiji Matsumoto's Space Pirate Captain Harlock. Her designer and chief builder was Tochirō Ōyama, Harlock's closest friend; Tochiro dies before the story opens, but his consciousness stays inside the ship's main computer.
What it does in the story
A pirate ship in the plain sense: about forty crew, a skull on the bow in most versions, a carved stern castle, a flag from the mast, and a bridge laid out like a surface battleship's.
What makes it different
-
A hull that can dive
Shock balancers let her leave orbit, cross an atmosphere and keep going into the sea, an entry that would break an ordinary ship apart.
-
Two bows, two eras
The 1978 anime gives her a pointed, shark-nosed bow on a blue hull. The 1979 Galaxy Express 999 film replaced it with a whale-like head carrying a large skull relief, green-hulled; later works renamed the pointed type the Death Shadow.
-
Guns that stack
The main battery is a triple-barrel pulsar cannon. The skull-bow ship mounts three turrets, one in the hull bottom; the attack-enhanced third ship adds a fourth for twelve barrels.
How big is it?
- 1:1500: The larger scale here, used for the second ship and the attack type.
- 1:2500: The compact kit, listed at 226.5 mm for the finished hull.

Frequently asked questions
1. Who built the Arcadia?
Tochirō Ōyama, Harlock's friend. He was dead before the series begins; his mind persists in the central computer, known only to Harlock and Miime.
2. Why two different bows?
The pointed bow is the 1978 television design. The skull relief on a heavier, whale-like head arrived with the 1979 Galaxy Express 999 film and became standard.
3. Do the kits need paint?
No. Both scales are moulded in colour and the 1:2500 kits are also glue-free; each includes a display stand.
