Sengoku Astray Gundam

侍ノ弐 Sengoku Astray Gundam is a Gunpla built and flown by Nils Nielsen in Gundam Build Fighters (2013–2014). It is not a machine from a war: Nils starts from the MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame, the Orb prototype of the SEED Astray manga, and rebuilds it as a samurai. The armour and the name are his tribute to his Japanese heritage.

What it does in the story

Nils enters the suit in the Gunpla World Tournament and takes it deep into the bracket, and its most-quoted fight is against Sei Iori and Reiji's Star Build Strike Gundam. In Astray's Blade, Meijin Kawaguchi III sums the machine up by noting that Nils named it Sengoku and then fought with Chinese martial arts.

What makes it different

  • The swords cut beams, not just armour. Kiku-ichimonji and Kotetsu carry a particle alteration coating that shifts the blades' Plavsky particle band to match the direction of a swing. That lets them block beam fire and cut particle barriers, and it broke them once, when the Star Build Strike moved the band faster than the coating could follow.
  • The shoulder armour hides a second pair of arms. Nils added the Sengoku Yoroi plates to cover the Red Frame's bare shoulders and knees. The side armour on the shoulders deploys as hidden arms that can swing the swords or deliver the Particle Fa Jin.
  • The Particle Fa Jin destroys from the inside. Taken from Chinese martial arts, the strike forces the suit's own Plavsky particles into an opponent's Gunpla and breaks it apart internally. It stops working if the particles have nowhere to flow.
  • The shield is a demon face worn on the back. Oni No Tate normally covers the rear, and Nils dismounts it only when he expects a heavy frontal attack, which is rare because he prefers to defend with the swords. Its eyes work as thrusters.

How big is it?

  • Head height: 17.9 m according to the spec Bandai publishes for the kit, which is a Gunpla scale figure rather than a full-size airframe
  • 1/144: roughly 12.4 cm

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Sengoku Astray a real mobile suit?

No. It is a Gunpla built on a 1/144 Gundam Astray Red Frame and flown in a Plavsky particle arena, so its numbers describe a model in a tournament rather than an in-universe machine.

2. What are Kiku-ichimonji and Kotetsu?

The names of its two samurai swords, carried on top of the shoulders when not in use. Swung hard they throw a shock wave that serves as a ranged attack, and both can also be thrown.

3. Why did the blades break against the Star Build Strike?

The coating tunes the swords to the battlefield's control particle band, and the Build Knuckle's acceleration shifted that band. The blades were no longer matched to it and snapped.

4. What is the Fuunsaiki for?

A horse-shaped support unit Nils built for the Gunpla Race, borrowed from Mobile Fighter G Gundam. The suit rides it during the race and does not take it into battle.
