SDV-04 Command Gundam

SDV-04 Command Gundam is the central machine of SD Command Chronicles, the SD Gundam line that grew out of the G-Arms story. He gathers a group of idle Gundams and trains them into the G-Arms combat team, and the design began as one of Koichi Yokoi's SD Gundam variations before Bandai released it as a kit in September 1989.

What it does in the story

Command Gundam appears without warning and builds the G-Arms team to fight the Zatarion Empire. He leads it through the campaign, and after being wounded he hands command to Captain Gundam while staying in the fight himself.

What makes it different

• It carries no beam weapon in its basic form. The suit is built for rough ground and earth-side operations, so the standard load is a laser machine gun with a grenade launcher, a heavy machine gun with a mega launcher, a command knife, a four-pod missile launcher, a smoke discharger and three Pineapple Ball grenades.
• The Heavy Weapon System Armor doubles its firepower. The optional armor is a full shell that fits over the suit and roughly doubles the overall firepower. Bandai later sold the combination as the Heavy Weapon Command Gundam.
• Its design comes from 1980s action films. The shoulder missile launcher was modelled on the M202 FLASH rocket launcher carried in the 1985 film Commando, and the character's drill-sergeant manner comes from Full Metal Jacket.
