Scale Figures

Scale Figures are pre-painted, fully assembled Japanese collectible figures sized in fractional scales — typically 1/4, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8, or 1/12 of the character's in-universe height. Unlike model kits, nothing is built. You unbox the figure, place it on a base, and it's ready for display. Catalog spans $25 prize-tier pieces to $1,200+ premium 1/4 scale, covering nearly every major anime, video game, and original-character IP from Japan. P-Rex Hobby is an official Bandai Recommended Hobby Store based in Vancouver, importing through authorized distribution channels — what you see here ships from a North American warehouse, not a Japanese forwarder.

Where to start (by collector type)

Your first scale figure. Start with POP UP Parade at $40-$60. Good Smile Company's flagship entry-tier line — clean sculpts, balanced color, ~17 cm tall, fixed pose, fits anywhere. Broadest IP coverage of any single line: One Piece, Demon Slayer, Frieren, Honkai, Genshin, JJK, etc. If the character you want exists in figure form, there's a strong chance Pop Up Parade made one.

Building an anime shelf on a budget. Prize-tier figures from Luminasta (SEGA), Coreful (TAITO), Noodle Stopper Figure (FuRyu), Trio-Try-iT (FuRyu), and TENITOL (FuRyu) sit at $25-$60. They're not "just gachapon" — modern prize figures from these lines have made huge sculpting and paint improvements over the past five years and now overlap with what entry-level scale figures looked like in 2018. Q Posket (Banpresto) is the most accessible coordinated line for Disney + mainstream anime characters.

Mainstream 1/7 / 1/8 anime collector. Move to Good Smile Company proper, MegaHouse, Kotobukiya (especially the Bishoujo line), Phat! Company, Max Factory, Wave, and BellFine. This is the $100-$250 tier — full PVC/ABS sculpts, multiple paint passes, dynamic poses. G.E.M. (MegaHouse) is the go-to line for male character collectors (One Piece, Naruto, Final Fantasy).

Premium 1/4 / 1/6 collector. Portrait Of Pirates (P.O.P) is MegaHouse's flagship One Piece scale line — $200-$500, dynamic poses, the gold standard for OP collectors. FREEing specializes in 1/4 scale figures (about 40 cm tall) at $300-$700. For Chinese-market original sculpts at premium quality, see Good Smile Arts Shanghai, Myethos, Solarain, and Wonderful Works.

Adult collector (18+). For cast-off, ecchi, and adult-themed scale figures from Native, BINDing, FREEing, Q-six, Vertex, Hakoiri-musume, and other 18+ specialty brands, see our age-restricted 18+ Anime Figures hub. Age verification applies at checkout; orders ship in discreet outer packaging.

One Piece / Dragon Ball / Demon Slayer specialist. Long-running shonen IPs have unusually deep figure backlogs. We carry P.O.P, G.E.M., Q Posket, prize tiers, and scale figures across the same character — making it easy to build a complete in-character set spanning multiple price tiers.

Display and protection

Most scale figures arrive with a base — for premium pieces ($200+), UV-resistant acrylic display cases are worth the investment to prevent yellowing. Avoid direct sunlight; PVC plastic gradually yellows under UV exposure (especially white-painted areas) and the damage is permanent. For mid-shelf collectors, microfiber dusting every 1-2 months keeps detail visible. We do not currently sell display cases — most collectors source them from IKEA (Detolf), Acrylics Etc, or specialist suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

What scale should I start with — 1/7 or 1/8?
1/7 is more common for modern releases and gives you a slightly larger, more detailed figure (~22-25 cm). 1/8 (~17-20 cm) is older and slightly cheaper. If shelf space is the constraint, 1/8 fits more pieces per shelf. If you want the figure to be the visual centerpiece, 1/7 has more presence. Most collectors end up with a mix.

What's the difference between a Pop Up Parade and a regular scale figure?
Pop Up Parade is a line, not a separate category — a Good Smile Company sub-brand designed to be affordable ($40-$60), shelf-friendly (~17 cm fixed scale), and faster to release. Sculpting and paint are simpler than premium 1/7 scale figures from the same studio (which run $150-$300), but the IP coverage is much broader. Think of it as the Honda Civic of scale figures — not the spec champion, but the daily-driver pick.

Are prize figures (Banpresto, SEGA, TAITO) worth buying?
Modern prize figures from Luminasta, Coreful, TENITOL, and Q Posket have improved dramatically since ~2020. Sculpts and paint quality now overlap with what entry-level scale figures looked like five years ago. For $30-$50, they're an excellent way to fill a shelf with characters from current-season anime without spending $150+ per piece.

How do I spot a bootleg / recast scale figure?
Common signs: paint blur on detailed areas (eyes, hair tips), seam lines visible at panel joins, a base that's noticeably lighter than authentic ones, missing or low-quality manufacturer hologram on the box, weird box typography, suspiciously low price (premium 1/7 scale figures don't go on sale at 50% off retail). Always buy from authorized retailers — P-Rex Hobby imports through licensed channels for North America, so authenticity is guaranteed.

How long is a typical pre-order lead time?
For mainstream scale figures (GSC, MegaHouse, Phat!, Kotobukiya) the standard window is 9-15 months from announcement to release. Premium and limited variants can stretch to 18-24 months. Pre-order early — many figures are produced in fixed runs, and once the pre-order window closes, secondary-market prices typically rise 1.5-3x.

Do scale figures appreciate in value?
Most mainstream releases stay near retail or slightly depreciate after release. The pieces that appreciate are limited editions, convention exclusives (Wonder Festival, Chara Hobby), pre-order-only colorways, and discontinued IPs that gain unexpected popularity. Buying purely for resale value is risky — buy what you actually want to display.

What about cast-off / removable-clothing figures?
Cast-off (where parts of the costume detach to reveal what's beneath) is most common in adult-themed scale figures. We list these in the 18+ Anime Figures collection only, with age verification. Mainstream scale figures rarely include cast-off; when they do, it's typically a tasteful armor or jacket piece.

Why are some figures listed as "Pre-Order" instead of in stock?
Japanese scale figures are typically produced in announcement-then-build cycles. The retailer (us) collects pre-orders during the announcement window, places a fixed allocation order with the manufacturer or distributor, then ships when the figure releases ~12 months later. Pre-order pricing locks in current rates; if you wait until release, the figure may already be sold out at retail and only available on the secondary market at a premium.

How do I prevent my figures from yellowing?
Two factors: UV exposure and ambient warmth. Keep scale figures out of direct sunlight (windowsill displays are the most common cause of yellowing). UV-blocking acrylic display cases help significantly — IKEA Detolf with UV film applied, or specialist acrylic cases from suppliers like Acrylics Etc. Climate-control matters less for newer PVC formulations but still helps.

Pop Up Parade vs Pop Up Parade L vs Pop Up Parade SP — what's the difference?
Standard Pop Up Parade (~17 cm) is the baseline. Pop Up Parade L is the "Large" variant — typically 23-26 cm at the same $60-$90 price point, used for monster, mecha, or oversized characters. Pop Up Parade SP (Special) is reserved for figures with extra accessories, complex bases, or transparent effects. Quality is consistent across all three; just different scale.

I want to buy NSFW / adult scale figures — how does that work?
See our dedicated 18+ Anime Figures hub. Age verification at checkout, discreet outer packaging, and a separate FAQ on shipping privacy and customs. Brands include FREEing, Native, BINDing, Q-six, Orchid Seed, and other specialty NSFW manufacturers.

What's the best way to start a collection if I have $300 budget?
Three options for a $300 starter:
(1) One mid-tier 1/7 scale figure (~$200) plus a Pop Up Parade ($50) and a Coreful prize ($45) — gives you variety in scale and price tier.
(2) Three Pop Up Parade pieces from the same series (~$60 each) — coordinated 1/7-equivalent group, ideal for thematic shelves.
(3) One premium piece pre-order ($300, releases in 12 months) — locks in pricing on a limited run, but you wait. Best if you have a specific character in mind.
