RX-79BD-1 Blue Destiny Unit 1

RX-79BD-1 Blue Destiny Unit 1 is the EXAM-equipped prototype from Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: The Blue Destiny (U.C. 0079), built by the Earth Federation around a system its designer brought over from Zeon. Yuu Kajima of the Guinea Pig Team becomes its pilot.

What it does in the story

On 29 November U.C. 0079 the suit was under test near a Zeon base when it lost control and attacked everything around it, and the Guinea Pig Team under Yuu had to disable it; its pilot was killed. Repaired and loaded onto a C-88 Medea, it was shot down in transit, and once the team recovered it Yuu was asked to fly it. On his first operation, against a Zeon missile base, the EXAM System let him take out the fire-control centres inside five minutes.

What makes it different

  • The EXAM System is a soul in the machine. It was built to give an ordinary pilot Newtype-level performance for a limited time, and its core component is described as the captive soul of the Newtype Marion Welch. The conflict between her and the system makes it unstable, and the suit can turn on friend and foe alike, which is where the name Blue Death comes from.
  • A limiter keeps it from running away. Federation mechanic Alph Kamra fitted a limiter that holds EXAM at roughly half output. A pilot can call up full output, but only for five minutes before the machine overheats, and the optical sensors glow red while the system is active.
  • Its body is two machines spliced together. The unit started as an RGM-79[G] GM Ground Type, but that airframe could not carry the EXAM System. The GM Ground Type's head, with EXAM already installed, was moved onto a modified RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type chassis, which is why the result is often called the Blue GM.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 18.5 m according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 13 cm, covering the HGUC kit

Frequently asked questions

1. Why is it called the Blue GM?

Because a GM Ground Type is what it began as, before the head and chassis were reworked. The name was used less once Unit 2 and Unit 3 arrived and the three machines needed telling apart.

2. Is Blue Destiny Unit 1 the same machine as Unit 3?

No. Unit 3 is a separate airframe and a separate subject; this page covers Unit 1 only, the machine Yuu Kajima flies with the Guinea Pig Team.

3. What happens if the EXAM System runs too long?

The limiter holds it near half output by default. Full output is only good for about five minutes before the suit overheats, and the system's instability means a pilot can lose the machine to it entirely.

4. Which kits cover this machine?

At 1/144 there is the 2007 HGUC kit, a 2017 HGUC “EXAM” release and a Gundam Base metallic gloss version, plus an SD Gundam G Generation kit. The type has not been issued at 1/100.
