RX-78GP03S Gundam GP03S Stamen

RX-78GP03S Gundam "Stamen" is the mobile suit half of the GP03 in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (1991, U.C. 0083). Its development codename is Dendrobium Stamen: the suit is built to dock into the Armed Base "Orchis" and form the RX-78GP03 Dendrobium. Anaheim test pilot Defrah Kar flies it first, and Kou Uraki takes it for Operation Stardust.

What it does in the story

The Albion takes delivery of the suit and the Orchis on 11 November U.C. 0083, and Kou has to learn the combined machine's fire controls before the fleet can move against the Delaz Fleet. He stays docked for the fighting that follows, and when the base goes back for resupply he detaches and flies the Stamen alone. On screen it rarely gets that chance: outside the second opening, the OVA almost never shows the suit free of the base, and the fourth Gundam Evolve episode is where it does.

What makes it different

  • The head carries no vulcan guns. The space goes to fire-control equipment for the Orchis and to the communications gear that handles docking. That is also why the cockpit is a panoramic monitor with a linear seat: one pilot has to run an entire weapons platform from it.
  • The arms hide a second pair. A folding manipulator sits inside each forearm with more than three times the reach of the arm itself, so the suit can pull rifles, bazookas and shields out of the Orchis' containers without undocking.
  • Two cockpit layouts were built. The standard fit is the panoramic cockpit. The alternative P-Spec swaps in the FF-XII-Sp Core Fighter II-Sp as a Core Block, and the letter P was never explained once the project records were erased. The panoramic fit won because its fire control was better.
  • The shield carries spare e-pacs. The Folding Shield folds along its vertical axis to sit inside the Orchis, hinges onto the forearm, and holds up to four e-pacs for the beam rifle. A small beam saber called a jutte hangs under the rifle for parrying.

How big is it?

  • Overall height: 18.2 m, with a head height of 18.0 m and a base weight of 41.6 t, according to Bandai's official spec
  • 1/144: roughly 12.6 cm, which covers the HGUC kit
  • 1/100: roughly 18.2 cm, which covers the MG

Frequently asked questions

1. Is the Stamen the same machine as the Dendrobium?

The Stamen is the suit; the Dendrobium is the Stamen plus the Orchis armed base. One project, two names for two different things.

2. What is the P-Spec?

The Core Fighter-equipped version of the Stamen, using the FF-XII-Sp Core Fighter II-Sp. The suit in the OVA has the panoramic cockpit instead, which is what surprises Kou when he first boards it.

3. Can the Stamen fight without the Orchis?

It can, and it is rated highly on its own. Bandai's material describes its performance as comparable to suits built years later. In the OVA it only gets a short window to show that.

4. Which kits are in this collection?

The original 1/144 kit from 1992, the HGUC 1/144 from 2001, and the MG 1/100 from 2001.
