RX-78-01[N] Gundam Local Type

RX-78-01[N] Gundam Local Type is a prototype from Mobile Suit Discovery, the design project run alongside Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin. Anaheim Electronics built it for the Earth Federation Forces, and this is the amphibious version.

What it does in the story

There is no animated sortie: the Local Type belongs to a design line and exists to test hardware. Space-use equipment came out and a hydrojet backpack went in so the suit could work underwater. What the trials proved fed into the RAG-79 Aqua GM, the RAG-79-G1 Gundam Marine Type and the RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type.

What makes it different

• The head wears a red visor on purpose. It covers the head camera and shields it from dust and flash, and it is the quickest way to tell this machine from the rollout-colour Local Type it was developed out of.
• The shield doubles as a weapon rack. The compact left-forearm shield carries a foldable bipod underneath and stows two beam sabers for when the hands are full. A later version went to the Gundam Ground Type.
• Its machine gun was tested on this airframe. Yashima Heavy Industrial completed the firing tests for the YHI YF-MG100 100mm machine gun using the RX-78[N]. An improved production model then went to other machines, and Zeon suits are recorded carrying it too.
